“Ten Penny Ale,” our flagship
brew is a smooth, amber-hued mellow version of a Scottish
Ale.* (5.6% ABV). It’s a good “session ale” and was awarded “Hartford’s Best Microbrew” for 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009 by The Hartford
Advocate’s Readers Poll. This beer is available year-round at your
local bar or favorite beer store. Why “Ten Penny?” My
grandfather used to say “You can get a good beer for a nickel, but a
really good beer will cost you ten pennies!” (Motto: Work
hard, drink well… Ten Penny Ale!)
Our popular “Dirty Penny Ale” (5.2% ABV) is a
hearty, but never heavy “black’n’tan” style* which is mixture of 60%
Ten Penny/40% our own signature stout. This beer is also available
year-round at your local bar or favorite beer store.
(Motto: Dirty Penny Ale …Polish One Off!)
"Penny Weiz"is our special version of a Belgian Witbier, incorporating 50% wheat and 50% barley. Based on an original homebrew recipe from Paul "Zok" Zocco (of Zok's Homebrewing Supplies), our Head Brewer, Joe Lushing collaborated with Paul to create a wonderfully refreshing, thirst-quenching brew especially for spring and summer enjoyment. To put a subtle spicy note to the beer, a "wee" bit of heather and sweet orange peel were added to the mix in keeping with our brewery's Scottish roots. "Penny Weiz" is a 5% ABV beer and is available in the spring and summer months in our familiar, recyclable, half-gallon growler bottle.
Ten Penny Ale Reserve the much
stronger version of our original Ten Penny recipe.
This beer is a dark brown ale, topped by a thick, loose tan head
(ABV 9.2%).The smells
of roasted grain and toffee are the first things you will notice with your
nose when you crack open the bottle. The tasting experience begins with a splash of caramel like flavor
on the tongue, but quickly melds into a full bodied roasted-malt
taste.As you savor this fine
ale you will also encounter subtle hints of chocolate and a smoked-malt
essence.After you have
finished your bottle you will realize this beer is truly a wonderful
merging of high alcohol content and rich full body flavor that will make
you want another pint to drink.
"Amazing Grace"
There are some things in this world that just can't be replicated and the 2010 version of "Amazing Grace" was an exciting, stunning success having aged our Ten Penny Ale Reserve for over 6 months in Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey barrels. It even won the Bevstar Silver Award by "Beverage World" magazine! However, "Amazing Grace" is destined to be reserved as our ever-changing, but always "amazing" specialty brew with it's essence and bold flavor issuing from the particular type of barrel it's aged in. This year, "Amazing Grace" will be bathed in French Cognac barrels that were most recently filled with Crown Royal! You be the judge, but alas, you'll have to wait til January 2012, but what a way to start the New Year!

"Stone of Destiny"
A fitting name for this Imperial Black and Tan! The actual "Stone of Destiny" is a simple slab of sandstone used as the coronation stone of the Scottish monarchs since time immemorial. The stone, shrouded in legend and mystery, is now safely esconced within the walls of Edinburgh Castle. Aged in whiskey barrels, "Stone of Destiny" is big and bold with hints of vanilla and a slight alcohol burn. 12% ABV. Available throughout the kingdom in December 2011.
Both "Ten Penny Ale" and "Dirty Penny Ale" are sold on draught, as well as in ½-gal. growlers. Having a party or just a laid-back weekend? Try our "Ten Penny Ale" in the unique 2.5-gal. "Wee Keg" - just the right size for a small gathering! (Accepts standard picnic pumps-) Requires pre-order and deposit at your local beer purveyor.
Using the finest barley malts
and hops available, each of our ales is handbrewed and carefully
conditioned to bring out the full flavor of the ingredients. The
finished ale is naturally clarified by the conditioning process,
thus no filtration is required. No chemicals or additives of any
kind are ever used.
What the Critics are saying......
The following are descriptive excerpts from The
Hartford Courant's "Microbrew Review", as written by Kerry R.
Callahan, a local attorney and microbrew aficionado.
Ten Penny Ale
Ten Penny Ale is
copper-brown and lively. The head is frothy and mildly fragrant, the
nose foretelling the beer’s malty character. Ten Penny Ale is a
good, mild Scottish Ale. (09/13/01)
Ten Penny Ale Reserve "Delightfully presented and brewed with the aficionado in mind, TPA Reserve is an excellent, enchanting local brew that flirts with greatness. There's biscuit, fruit, toffee and faint smoke in the foretaste. A pleasant apricot note flashes across the nose. This finish is outstanding with a decidedly balanced, distinctly Scotch sign-off. Due to popular demand, Ten Penny Ale Reserve will soon be available on draught." (09/27/07)
Father Christmas Highland Ale
Legend has it that Father Christmas wandered through Scottish villages gathering a merry following and distributing sweets to children and "wee heavy," a cheery libation, to adults. Like its predecessors, Father Christmas is heavy and potent ( 9.2 percent), tremendously and uniquely satisfying and flavorful. The aroma of toasted grain and mocha are mouth-watering. Father Christmas Ale is ruddy and ruby-brown, topped by a thick, loose, tan head. Sweet, roasted malt and mild smoky tastes merge into a phenomenal finish. The tall, cobalt-blue bottle, brightly labeled, makes for a wonderful presentation and host's gift. Delightful in every respect, Father Christmas Highland Ale is a Yuletide staple and Santa's favorite. He enjoys a pint at my house annually and never spares a drop. (12/20/07)
