Kevin K. of W. Hartford muses:
Now, the best part of the evening - Lia Fail - the Coronation Stone - rumored to originate in bilibical Eqypt, then to Ireland, then by St. Columba to Iona, and finally to Scone Castle, where it was used as the base to crown the Scottish kings until stolen by Edward I of England in 1296 and moved to Westminster Abbey, and not returned until four Scottish collegians liberated the stone on Christmas eve, 1950, and delivered it to Arbroath, that town of the famous declaration - the Stone of Scone...the "Stone of Destiny." And now, not only a name for a new pipe band, but a marvelous new elixir from my friends at The Olde Burnside Brewing Company.
At 12%, I expected a powerhouse, but the Stone delivered more than that; a chococoffee deliciousness that was silken in texture and so engaging that I forgot all about the lackluster Tiger offense and what should have been disappointment in another lop-side 1 vs.2 "national championship" game turned into shear delight and wonderment in the brewer's art.
Thank you, Olde Burnside Brewing Company - Slainte Mhath!
Zachary G. of Morris, CT, writes:
I just wanted to say thank you for making such a great micro-brew. I am an aspiring home brewer myself, with my first batch of Amber Ale on the way. But I have to say, I LOVE your Ten Penny and Dirty Penny Ales. I never really do this kind of thing, but I have just finished off the last glass from the growler of Ten Penny, and I just wanted to say thank you again for brewing such a great beer. Hopefully, once I can finally get on my way to All Grain brewing, I can drop off one of mine as thanks for all the years of making two of my favorite brews!
AJ of Ellington joins our newsletter:
Love TPA. Best beer ever!!!!!!
Name not given:
Stumbled across your Dirty Penny at Austin's Liquors in Worcester, MA. Felt compelled to say it's pretty feaking awesome stuff! Thanks for brewing it!
Joel K. from Tolland reminisces:
Back when Cheney's was open across from the Manchester library, the waitress recommended that I try Ten Penny Ale. When I told her how much I liked it, she said "then why don't you tell it to the guy sitting to your right....he owns the brewery." I had a nice chat with Bob and have been a fan ever since.
Mei F. of New Jersey:
Want to thank you for the informative tour of your brewery. I just got a bottle of your Ten Penny Ale Reserve! You should expand your business; my friends in NY/NJ love your Ten Penny Ale! Happy brewing!
Kevin W. of Atlanta wants more!
Last fall, a friend of mine introduced me to this phenomenal ale and I have been craving another sip ever since. After talking to someone in your brewery, by phone, I understand that you are going to brew another batch of Amazing Grace in January of this year. If possible, I would like to order 48 bottles of this batch and have them shipped to Atlanta. Please let me know if this is possible.
Ten Penny Hartford Wanderer:
I just returned a few weeks ago from my vacation in Ireland and as luck
would have it the Heineken cup was on tour at one of the hotels I was
staying in. Munster was to play Australia in a match the next day so
both teams were at the event as well as several Ireland national team
players. Unfortunately I didnt have a ticket to get into the party but
was able to persuade my waiter to let me in the back door to the
private event room. It was one of my highlights of my trip getting to
meet all the players and just listen to some of their stories. Just so
happen that I had my Ten Penny Hartford Wanderers jersey on and got a
nice pic of me with the Heineken cup. I just figured that you would
like to know that Burnside Brewery was represented at the Heineken cup
party as well as both the Samoa/Ireland match and Munster/Australia
match. Click here for the pic of the cup with your jersey.
Justin:
On a side note you really need to put out more Amazing Grace. It is by
far my favorite so far and I hate that it is a limited run. I picked up
another 14 bottles yesterday for myself as well as gifts though not all
that certain they will make it long enough to be given as gifts. (pic
of fridge below) After doing a bit more holiday shopping a slightly
entertaining story ensued. I ended up at Hooters to grab some wings
for lunch. I was BS'n with the bartender and we started talking about
the your brewery, the Amazing Grace batch and how great a brew it was.
To move things along, after refusing to sell mine to them I ended up
having to run back to Manchester Wine and Liquor to buy up the
remaining 10 bottles for the Hooters staff. Hey I got 30+ wings for my
travel plus spread the word a bit about the brewery. Not a bad deal at
all. Hope the season is treating you guys great and have a wonderful
holiday! Looking forward to the pipes in the valley 2011! Click here for the photo.

Local guy, Joe M. writes:
Hi, I really enjoyed your beers at the VNA fundraiser last Friday night. It was nice to meet your sales manager, Rich; he's quite a character! He turned my wife on to your Penny Weiz and she couldn't get enough; she, in the past, would not even drink beer. I liked Dirty Penny, followed by Ten Penny - flavor that is robust and to the point. I also noticed, with all the wine vendors there, not one of them spoke of their wines in the manner or with such passion as your guy did about your beers. Keep up the good work...Connecticut does have one good beer maker.
From New Milford, Josh E. comments:
Hello, I was curious about what kind of stout you use in your Dirty Penny Ale. I tried it at a pizza restaurant in Canton, CT and loved it! It was awesome! I am a homebrewer and I attempt to try various beers for ideas.
Dave O. of Branford writes:
"Just tried your Ten Penny Ale for the first time this weekend. I have just one question: where have you been all this time? Very, very nice. This beer is one of the best well kept secrets of all time ...and it needs to stop! Keep brewing...I'll be back for more."
Beer critic, Pete Larrivee of Motif Magazine (Rhode Island) April 2010, names "Ten Penny Ale" his #1 choice of his favorite Top 10 brews! "When I tried this beer it was so good I almost had a stroke. Now I was fairly young at the time, and new to the craft beer explosion that was happening around me, but this was the Scottish Ale that got me to like Scottish Ales. This is what beer is supposed to taste like, I remember thinking. It's malty and smooth, but with its own faint hop character and a slight oak undertone to it."
Now, there's a man who knows his beer! Thanks, Pete!
From Nicole V. of St.Cloud, MN:
A friend of mine from NY raved about this beer (Dirty Penny) - wondering if there is a way to get it in MN?
Excerpt from NY Times article (1/27/10): "The New Old Way to Tote Your Beer"
"Growlers - 64-ounce glass vessels that look like a moonshine jug - have become the beer accessory of the moment." .....
“People’s palates have become more sophisticated,” Mr. Bloostein said. “Look at the number of beer bars in Manhattan, and especially Brooklyn. And the offerings at regular bars are leaning toward craft beers.”
The Whole Foods beer store on Houston Street began its program in 2007. The chain’s first to carry the vessels, it has done as much as any store to introduce New Yorkers to growler culture. The manager, Jeff Wallace, said he saw other reasons for the trend.
“It’s basically a really good way to promote recycling, because you bring back your jug,” Mr. Wallace said. “And it’s a cheap and affordable way to get fresh draft beer.” He said growlers made up half the beer store’s business. Whole Foods stores in TriBeCa and on the Upper West Side also offer beer for growlers.
Brian Patuto, Beer Specialist @ Acton Wine & Spirit Co., Acton, MA, writes:
At this year's MassPack showcase you were tasting your Ten Penny, Penny Weiz and Dirty Penny ales. It was a pleasure to speak with Mr. McClellan about his beer and how we could carry it in the store. I am pleased to tell you that after a week on the shelf, your growlers became the hottest bottle in our beer cooler for Thanksgiving, selling out well before noon on Wednesday, November 25th. We'll be ordering more with the intention of keeping it as a staple in the store.
Brian from the High Falls Cafe in High Falls, NY writes:
We sell your awesome brew!! Just love it. It's selling at a consistent level, even on these slower winter nights.
Bob M. from San Diego asks:
I am from San Diego and will be visiting in East Hartford for three weeks. I have been there before and hae tasted "Ten Penny Ale" and liked it very much. I was wondering where I could purchase a growler or two of your very fine ale. Is it sold at the brewery? (Our brews are not sold directly from the brewery; local outlets are listed on our website under "Where To Find It.")
From Courtney in NY:
When are the tours of the brewery? We lived in CT for 7 years and totally fell in love with Ten Penny. Now we live in NY and can't get it....we load up every time we visit, but were thinking of touring the brewery. (Please just call the brewery (860) 528-2200 and work out a mutually convenient time-no charge. BTW, our brews are now available in Dutchess County, NY)
From Chris R., of Waterbury, CT:
I have been enjoying Ten Penny for a few years now, and I had the joy of meeting some of your team at Ommegang 2009. Even got a picture with the sword! As I pour myself another glass of the most amazing beer which suits my tastebuds perfectly, I just wanted to drop Olde Burnside a quick email to say thank you.
From Don K, of Vernon, CT:
Best Ale I have ever tasted! Dirty Penny is so much better than Guinness!
Randy B, a home brewer involved with the Boston area Cask-conditioned Ale Support Campaign writes:
I was in Connecticut at the Wood N' Tap this past weekend and happened to try your Ten Penny Ale. I found it to be delicious, but that wonderful texture made this by far the best American-made session ale that I have yet come across. I would be interested in seeing your ale at one of our events (www.nerax.org). Cheers for making such a delightful ale. (And Randy did, indeed, cask-condition our Ten Penny Ale and presented it at "Pipes in the Valley" this year to great aclaim!)
From Amy in Granby, CT:
Thank you so much for making the best beer! We always have a log of Ten Penny in our fridge, and have so for the past 4-5 years. Nothing else we have even compares to the wonderful brew you creat! We took a tour in March and had a fantastic time. We love Ten Penny and will always be loyal to you and your brews! Keep up the great work!
Vinnie M, a recent transfer from Glastonbury, CT to L.A.:
I recently moved to Los Angeles from Glastonbury, CT, and find myself missing the Ten Penny big time! Is there any way to order some or buy it out on the west coasts? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your beer is awesome, I love it anytime I can find it; and always look forward to my next one!
From Tom Twitchell, Burlington, VT:
My name is Tom "Twitch" Twitchell of Avenue Bistro Bar & Grill, in Burlington, Vt.
Farrell Distributing tasted me on the Ten Penny Ale, and I, plus many of my employees, fell in love. I just wanted to thank you and to let you know that I have it on draught at my bar, so that you can update where to find it.
Thanks again,

From Prof. David Freeman, Adjunct Professor of Management and Organization, CCSU, New Britain, CT writes:
I wish to thank you for co-operating with my students on their term project this past semester. Ashley Rossi, Adam Lobaugh and Rich Madara were very enterprising in choosing a local company that they could visit, rather than doing their research on-line as is common with most students. The paper that they presented was well structured and told a great, and unusual story, about the origins of your business, and its success to date. As a transplanted Englishman, I enjoy good beer and have sampled your brew...it's very good! I wish you continued success as you expand into the rest of New England. P.S. They did get an A for their paper!
Greg D. of Stowe, VT:
I have been called by friends a "beer snob" which I wear proudly. It so happens I am very particular about my beer. Last evening I tried your Ten Penny Ale and it's absolutely wonderful!
From Christine F., Special Orders Div. BC Liquor Distribution Branch:
We have an individual who is interested in obtaining Ten Penny Beer. Please advise if you export small orders to Canada? Ans: Sorry to our fan in Vancouver, we don't export out of the country, but come back and visit us real soon!
William Beaudry
Thank you guys for coming to my home and spending time with our TPA club. We will talk about that night for a long time to come. Thanks again for all the cool Ten Penny merchandise. We look forward to using it at every meeting and hopefully seeing you again at another meeting. Your beer is really something special, keep it up and let us know however we can participate or help with the sales.
A "Ten Penny Ale Club?!
Apparently, a bunch of guys in Ellington have formed their own TPA Club! They meet every Wednesday night in Bill Beaudry's garage. Says founding member Paul Scavetta, "We are a loosely formed club at the moment with about 10-15 guys, but we are trying to get it organized into a REAL club with dues and such. Right now we are just a group of guys who love Ten Penny and each others company."
Jenny Robinson, Manager, Lumberyard Pub in W.Redding, CT writes:
"A year before we opened our bar, someone at another bar slurred the words "Ten Penny Ale" and made me promise to try it on tap when we finally opened the Lumberyard Pub. Well, a promise is a promise and I'm glad the drunk told me! We haven't taken Ten Penny off our draft lines since the day we opened our doors. Your beer has become a staple here at the Lumberyard, and we thank you for brewing such a delicious amber delight! Thank you guys again for brewing such greatness; I think I'm going to have to go pour myself one right now : ) "
Chris & Judy Grimes of Birmingham, England:
stopped by for a brewery tour while on vacation here and remarked on the Ten Penny Ale: "This is a true ale; the real thing. Splendid!"
From Carrie Schultz:
upon finding our brews at Cookhouse Restaurant and M&R Liquors,
"Great beer - it's nice to have some local talent on tap and available at our favorite restaurants and package stores."
Rolf R. of Canterbury, CT:
"So happy to find TPA Reserve at Crazy Bruce's in Bristol, CT...please come closer to Canterbury!"
Mark G. of Oakville, CT:
"I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your beers. I recently tried the Penny Weiz and absolutely love it!"
Ryan L from Cigna:
I first tried Ten Penny Ale at the Landing Zone in Burlington, CT years ago. I was blown away! Local microbrews I've had usually aren't that great. The flavor of TPA was excellent! I made it my mission to visit restaurants and pubs that served it. I had a big gathering of friends in Hartford at Pig's Eye, they had it too. We downed a few pitchers of TPA that night. I have since turned on many people to drinking only TPA. The Corner Pug in West Hartford is a place my friends and I frequent and TPA compliments the food there perfectly. My friends from Boston are just as big fans and they were able to get their local package store to carry both TPA and DPA. They have since hooked a bunch of other Boston people on it. Always trying to help expand the Ten Penny community!! Ryan L. - a devout Ten Penny Ale fan!
From: Greg in Kent, OH
One of my friends just got me 3 growlers of your brews as a wedding gift. We just drank the first one the other night, the Ten Penny Ale, and it was GREAT. I plan on splitting one of the other ones with a friend tonight, and will probably take care of the last one over the weekend. At which point, I'll be 500 miles away from the brewery, with no access to your delicious brews. How do I remedy this problem? Can you guys ship to Ohio?
I'll obviously still be supporting my local Cleveland brewery for the time being, but we need some more Old Burnside out in the Midwest.....especially in Ohio....in an election year!
Let me know how we can make this happen.
Your brews were the second best wedding gift!
From: a DPA fan from Decatur, IN
Hi to all - you had the best float in the (St. Patrick's Day) parade. You have the best ale ever, and you had the best music on your float. I just got back from Digger McDuff's in Cromwell where I had an icy pint of Ten Penny! Thanks - Cynthia L, a very satisfied Ten Penny Customer.
From: Mark in Michigan
My wife and I were recently visiting her daughter in Darien, CT. I love to try different brews, of all types and origins, then I tried Dirty Penny, and fell in love with the flavor and smoothness. I was wondering if there was any way that I could place an order?
Sean from 2beerguys.com
I was in W. Hartford last week on business and tired and hungry, stopped in a pub to grab a bite and a beer. WOW! Your ten penny knocked my socks off! I prefer ales over lagers but 10 penny is one of the best ales I ever had. Everywhere we went we asked for 10 penny and everybody had it! Made the trip very memorable!
Mike from Los Angeles, CA
I am glad that you guys were at the Lowell Ribs and Brew
festival. The Dirty Penny is awesome and it's cool that you guys
arrived in style with the decked-out mini keg van.
John M and
Don M from Oklahoma City,
OK
I recently tried Ten Penny for the first time on a business trip to
Hartford and thought it was great. A few days later some other co-workers
flew in and I turned them onto it. We all agree it is one of the best
beers. We have searched the L.A. area and unfortunately it seems you do
not distribute out here.
Can you ship me some?
Sorry, John and Don,
but our brews don't "travel" well. They must remain cold because
they are unfiltered and contain no preservatives.

Mark
Gail,
please be sure to let Bob and the rest of the guys know that we DID
make it back to Oklahoma City with 8 carefully packed, and chilled,
growlers (6 Dirty Penny and 2 Ten Penny), thanks to the understanding
nature of the desk agents at Southwest Airlines. As they unpacked
our extremely large ice-chest to check our stash, we had roughly 75-80
people back up in line behind us, many of which wanted to know why we were
packing that much brew, and where they could also get some. So, we
gave away all 8 of the bottle tags to people in line, and managed to
prevent the gate agents from offering other customers samples of our
brew!
We are big fans of the dark brews, such as Guinness and
the like, but we really love the micro-brews. And nothing we've
found compares to yours. We are trying to ration our supply of Dirty
Penny, because we're not sure when our business travels will allow us to
hit the Hartford area again. We hope we can make it back for the
"Pipes in the Valley" shindig. Until then, please keep the kettles
bubbling. We will be back!

Hello Bob,
I opened a bottle of
your Ten Penny Ale as soon as I got home. It is outstanding. Be
assured I will spread the word. Thank you for your generosity. See
you next week,

source , I'm happy to find out.

Co.")
I absolutely love your Ten Penny Ale. Discovered it while dining
out at a restaraunt one night and was later pleasantly surprised to find
it sold at our local Big Y store in Tolland. Bought my first 2 growlers
and have been hooked ever since. You've got "IT", the magic recipe, don't
change one thing
Happy brewing!
From: Sandra
Hey Tim, I was working in Avon
this week. I happened to stop at M&R on Rt. 44 for a TPA
growler to bring home, when low and behold I found 4 pints
of your TPA Reserve. I bought them out of their entire stock, and
gave one to my buddy. They were fantastic as usual. My buddy
was extremely impressed and he went so far as to say that it may have been
his favorite beer of all time. It is definitely my favorite and I'm
glad to see it in stores. Keep on keepin' on with the production. I
look forward to finding more of this coveted treasure down this
way.
P.S. I love the bottles.
From: Dave
Hi,
I just tried your beer for the first time at a Wethersfield
event that you were at. Kudos to you for brewing a great beer...it gets my
thumbs up as a great microbrew. I'll be sure to spread the word. Best of
luck to you in making the Ten Penny Ale a huge
hit.
From: Sean M
Hi
Folks @ Burnside Brewers;
Just bought my first jug of Ten Penny Ale
tonight & I must say I think it'sgreat. I love the fact it's a
local product & I just checked out the website to find which
establishments serve it on tap, locally. I don't go out much , but will
definitely be buying Ten Penny Ale (for home, non-driving use)on a regular
basis. I also like the bit of local history on the back label & the
website.
My Great Grandfather drove a horse & wagon & later
a truck for the Hanley's Ale Co. of Providence RI, here in eastern CT,
delivering barrels o'beer/ale.-----Keep up the good brewing.
Your newest loyal customer,
"I am absolutely sure that you guys have heard this before... but Ten
PennyAle is exactly what beer should taste like! It is unbelievably
satisfying with every pint. I tell everyone about it and those who haven't
heard of it are mezmerized. Congratulations on brewing a beer that I am
proud to call CT's finest!"
